Oranjemund Landfill Phase 2

The Oranjemund Town Council aims to play its part in reducing the Carbon footprint by meeting Environmental standards of Solid waste managements with this. Iit is therefore constructing a Landfill second of its kind in Namibia to the Kuppferberg landfill in Windhoek. The above Landfill consists of waste collection cells, Leachate dam and a Material Recycling Facility. The Cells consist of a lining system comprising an in-situ sand layer, a base preparation layer of silty clayey layer, a 1.5mm smooth HDPE geomembrane on the basal area and a double side textured HDPE geomembrane on the slope area, a protection geotextile on the basal and slope area, a stone leachate collection layer with a network of slotted HDPE collection pipes, and a geotextile separation/filter layer.

The proposed new Leachate Dam also has a lining system comprising an in-situ sand layer, a base preparation layer, a silty clayey layer, a 1.5mm smooth HDPE geomembrane on the basal area and a double side textured HDPE geomembrane on the slope area, a protection geotextile on the basal and slope area, and a stabilised sand layer.

The Lining prevents leachate seepage into the ground preventing pollution of the underground water and under-earth life. The leachate is thereby streamed into the leachate dam using pipe networks.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

• The project entails the construction of a landfill site for the Oranjemund Town Council.
• The project is divided into three (3) phases.
• Phase 2 comprises the construction of cell 1, leachate dam, material recycling facility, water tower, conservancy tank, and weighbridge as well as an access road linking the landfill site to the town.
