What the Watt? Flipping the switch on energy usage

In a world where energy powers everything from our appliances and cars to office buildings and so much more, the need for a smarter and more sustainable way to generate and use power is a must. But how can we keep up with our power-hungry lifestyles without depleting our resources and harming the planet?

While there’s no simple answer, there are ways to enhance efficiency, reduce waste and harness renewable energy resources. We chatted to Lithon Project Consultants Director and green energy expert, Set-son Shifidi, to get his insights.

Understanding energy usage

To understand our energy usage, we must do an audit of the energy being used vs. the energy needed. Energy audits are an integral part of managing our energy as they provide a comprehensive analysis of energy use, while also identifying areas where energy is being wasted. Based on these findings, we can pinpoint the problems and create smarter strategies to make the most of our resources while also cutting down on waste.

The power of design

Energy efficiency is all about doing more with less. According to Set-son, “Optimising energy system designs is crucial for maximising efficiency and performance.” There are several advanced engineering techniques that can tailor power systems to focus on specific needs, and ensure that every component operates at peak efficiency.

These range all the way from using energy-efficient equipment to implementing control systems for pumping systems, and incorporating automation. In this way, not only can we reduce energy consumption but also extend the lifespan of equipment, which leads to additional cost savings.

Lighting the way with renewable energy

As we search for smarter ways to power our world, renewable energy offers several bright solutions. If we start incorporating solar, wind and other green technologies into existing infrastructure, businesses will cut energy costs and shrink their carbon footprint at the same time. Renewable energy installations, like solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on rooftops, are powerful ways in which businesses are already meeting internal energy needs while supporting cleaner energy production. By embracing renewable energy, businesses are not only investing in their future but also playing a crucial role in building a sustainable planet for generations to come.

Overcoming Challenges

While the benefits of going greener are clear, the transition to these practices has its challenges. High initial costs and the need for new infrastructure can be a deterrent to some. However, Set-son advises that with ongoing technological advancements and strategic investments, these obstacles can be overcome. And there’s often a promise that the cost of these systems will be repaid through energy cost savings in as little as five years.
