Meet Brandon van Wyk, Civil Engineer in Training
From a young age, Brandon was captivated by the world of civil engineering, learning the ropes from his father during holiday jobs. Now at Lithon’s Swakopmund office, he’s inspired by the potential to positively impact communities and the environment. When he’s not engineering solutions, Brandon enjoys personal development and quality time with loved ones.
What inspired you to become a civil engineer?
I’ve been exposed to civil engineering elements, including plumbing and residential construction, from a young age. Seeing how big projects can change things for the better pushed me to want to make a positive difference.
When and why did you join Lithon?
I started on a contractual basis in July 2023 and became permanent in January 2024. I was attracted to Lithon’s core values, especially its people focus, integrity, excellence and loyalty. It resonated with me because it matched who I am and showed me a clear way to grow.
What does a typical day for you at the office look like?
I get to the office early to catch up on some reading and plan my day or week. When my senior arrives, we have a discussion about our expectations and deadlines. We prioritise our tasks based on a matrix that highlights the urgency and importance of our projects.
What do you love most about your job?
Knowing that the projects we work on will make life better for communities and keep things safe and sustainable for the future gives me a real sense of fulfilment. I love being part of creating a better future.
What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned during your time at Lithon?
I’ve learned a lot about working as a team and how to talk to clients and manage projects. Engaging in conversation and collaboration within our team has been a key learning point.
How do you think engineering can lead to a better future?
Engineering is all about finding better ways to solve problems, using resources wisely, and having as little negative impact on the environment as possible. All of this helps society move forward.
What are your favourite projects at Lithon, and why?
I don’t have one favourite project because each one has taught me something valuable. They’ve all been key to my growth.
Who has been your greatest inspiration (both in life and your career)?
I don’t really focus on one person for inspiration. I pick up on good qualities or great things people do in different areas, and that inspires me to grow and be better.
What is a professional goal you’d like to achieve this year?
I’m aiming to get better in different areas of civil engineering, like project management, learning about the business side, and getting better at design. It’s all about being more efficient and managing my time well.
What do you get up to when you’re not working?
I focus on personal development and spending time with family and friends, having meaningful conversations and just doing fun things together.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I’m really optimistic and I believe we all have the power to change people’s lives. I’d like to help students who are coming up; give them advice and listen to them. Even if it’s just a few minutes, it can make a difference.
