Lithon Foundation: A Bridge of Hope

The Lithon Foundation is dedicated to spreading love and hope by connecting with organisations that are passionate about making a difference. One such inspiring story comes from Bridge of Hope, a non-profit organisation based in Katutura, Windhoek.

Building Bridges of Hope

Founded in 2010 by Eugenia Gcilishe, a retired teacher with a big heart for disadvantaged children, Bridge of Hope has become a lifeline for over 200 kids in the community. Eugenia’s creative approach not only provides food for the children but also creates jobs for their parents.

Eugenia’s Inspiring Journey

Eugenia started with a simple yet powerful idea: to feed children and empower their parents. After attending a baking class at Namib Mills, she began baking biscuits and selling them to fund the soup kitchen, ensuring a steady supply of food for the children. Seeing the potential of her initiative, Lithon Foundation supported her by purchasing her biscuits as Christmas gifts for our clients.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Eugenia’s ingenuity is truly remarkable. A few years ago, she asked an employee at Namib Mills for some used empty flour bags. The response was amazing – she received 500 bags. She hired parents to clean and wash the bags, paying them a small fee. Then, she approached a manager at Shoprite and proposed trading her products (biscuits and shopping bags made from the flour bags) for food for the soup kitchen. The manager’s purchase of 500 bags ensured the children had enough food for several months.

Building Skills and Creating Jobs

Eugenia’s efforts go beyond just providing meals. She’s started producing shopping bags again, training 2-3 mothers to cut and stitch them, ensuring they are of high quality. These beautifully crafted bags are sold for N$25 each, generating extra income for the parents. When there is enough food, Eugenia uses the remaining funds to buy school clothes, shoes and stationery for the children.

More Than Just a Meal

Providing nourishing meals and income is just one part of Bridge of Hope’s mission. Eugenia also offers love and attention, resolves conflict at school and home, and ensures the mental and emotional well-being of the children. Her holistic approach creates a nurturing environment where the children can thrive.
