Green Industrialisation: Namibia’s Rise to Sustainable Power

The fight against pollution and the need to future-proof the earth are driving a global movement towards green industrialisation. This includes more efficient and sustainable designs, less construction waste, green-production technologies and renewable energy sources.

With increased urbanisation, the benefits of green industrialisation are far-reaching. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions, promotes resource efficiency, and fosters economic growth through new technologies and industries.

Namibia: Perfectly Positioned for Going Green

With its commitment to sustainability and an abundance of sun, wind and other natural resources, Namibia is set to lead the way towards cleaner energy sources. Not just for ourselves, but for the rest of the world too. Lithon Project Consultants’ Director and green industrialisation expert, Set-son Shifidi shares that “Namibia is poised to become a green energy hub through the exportation of green energy, green hydrogen, green ammonia and other carbon-neutral derivatives.”

This puts Namibia in an excellent position to focus on not just producing and using cleaner materials, but also harnessing sustainable energy in our engineering. Namibia’s potential for green industrialisation is impressive and, according to Set-son, is already being harnessed in a few ways:

  • Solar Energy: With abundant sunlight, Namibia can significantly generate electricity and provide heating through solar energy.
  • Wind Energy: The coastal areas of Namibia experience strong and consistent winds, making wind energy a reliable source of electricity.
  • Biomass: Made from organic materials such as wood and animal waste, biomass plays a vital role in Namibia’s energy mix.
  • Hydropower: Namibia benefits from perennial rivers that are ideal for hydroelectricity production.
  • Green Engineering: Companies like Lithon are looking to all of the above in our projects, while ensuring more efficient designs and less tolerance for construction waste.

Overcoming Challenges

Switching to green industrialisation isn’t without its obstacles. High initial costs and the need for new infrastructure can be challenging. But with ongoing technological advancements and strategic investments, these can be overcome, leading to a sustainable and prosperous future for Namibia.

Looking ahead

Green Industrialisation has the potential to transform Namibia, not only through cleaner energy but also by creating jobs, stimulating economic growth and attracting investment. With its abundant resources, commitment to sustainability, and skilled workforce, Namibia is well-positioned to become a leader in this exciting new era.
