Bridging the Gap: Architecture meets Engineering at NUST
When one of our Senior Structural Engineers, Estee Beukes, was invited to help guide young architects at The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), she welcomed the opportunity to share her expertise.
It’s this kind of initiative that forms a core part of Lithon’s mission to nurture talent and give back to the community – helping to shape a brighter future through knowledge sharing and mentorship.
From Blueprints to Buildings
Wondering why an engineer was asked to guide student architects?
Engineers are integral in turning architects’ ambitions into reality. By providing structural integrity and innovative technologies, we ensure that their imaginative designs meet the rigorous demands of safety, sustainability and usability. This collaboration not only pushes the boundaries of what is architecturally possible but also ensures that these creations can endure for generations.
A Practical Challenge
The challenge for NUST’s third-year architecture students was no small feat: designing a 40-story high-rise on just a 300m² plot. This project required a deep understanding of both architectural creativity and the rigorous demands of engineering, challenging students to push the boundaries of traditional building design.
The students presented their initial concepts in the first round, followed by a scale model presentation in the second round. Estee Beukes assisted Adjunct Professor, Prof. Jaco Wasserfall, with the evaluations for the designs For many participants, this project is their first real taste of what it means to work in architecture and engineering.
“The opportunity to take part in shaping the minds of young individuals is quite the adventure. The aspects of the built environment are quite unique, and the exercise illustrates creative thinking, designing and realising the actual implementation of the concept.” – Senior Structural Engineer, Estee Beukes
Preparing Future Innovators
This partnership between NUST and Lithon highlights a vital point: the future of our built environment relies on integrated, multidisciplinary thinking. By training students in this way, we’re preparing them to take on complex design and construction challenges, driving both innovation and sustainability forward.
The result? A new generation of creators dedicated to improving the spaces where we all live and work.
