These vehicles can navigate roadways and avoid hazards without human input, thanks to AI’s ability to see and react to the environment. In future, more and more self-driven vehicles will take to the roads, helping to make roads safer and improve traffic flow. Imagine reading a book while your AI-powered car takes care of the driving!
Say hello to fewer traffic jams! Many traffic-related issues, like how to shorten a commute or make traffic congestions disappear, can be solved by AI. Apps like Google Maps use AI to regulate congestion through traffic counts and the number and type of vehicles using a specific road. AI algorithms can also adjust traffic signals and assist with real-time route planning – not only for vehicles, but for pedestrians too. This helps to optimise traffic flow and reduce delays. All of this allows authorities and transport engineers make data-driven decisions on how traffic needs to be regulated.
Many cars already have built-in ‘auto reminders’ for services and maintenance, but AI can be used to keep a more detailed record of a vehicle’s condition and predict when a service, or other maintenance, is needed. Naturally, this makes it easier to prevent breakdowns and reduce downtime, improving the lifespan, efficiency and reliability of transportation systems.
AI can track and analyse driver behaviour to identify potential safety risks like distracted or drowsy driving. This helps to prevent accidents and improves overall safety on the roads.
AI is already being integrated into the shipping, air, rail and road sectors making them more efficient and cost-effective. It can determine the most economical routes and options for freight transport in all its forms. It can also be used to monitor road, rail, and air conditions – improving efficiency and reducing costs throughout the entire transport ecosystem. The result of these improvements is a friendlier and more interconnected transportation network for both passengers and cargo.
